Fantastic sounding mic that punches way above its price tag

I was a huge fan of the v-mic D3, the non pro. I beat that mic up over the last 2-3 years and it stood up to all my abuse. It fell into the ocean not long ago so it was time to get a new one. I was going to upgrade to the D3 Pro then I saw that the D4 was now on sale. It had the biggest selling point of the D3 Pro, the adjustable gain knob on the year, and it was about $40 cheaper so I decided to give it a go. SO happy I did!

Audio quality has been a step up from my previous D3. Now I don't know if they upgraded the capsule or not. The improvement in audio quality could be the fact that now I can crank up the gain of the mic and turn down the preamps in my camera and as everyone knows, camera preamps are just not the best. The noise floor was noticeably lower that my D3, again likely because of the gain control. Build quality is also really impressive. The all metal mic has a very premium feel to it. They have changed the foam wind cover so that it has a hard plastic sleeve on the inside of it so it goes on and off the mic easily but also stays in place really well. The all foam one of my D3 slipped off fairly often. They also include a nice dead cat to go over that foam wind muff to help you in windy situations. In the box you also get 3 cables. 2 USB C to TRRS cables. They look identical but Deity says one of them is Sony compatible. There is a third cable which is a USB C to USB C cable so you can plug directly into a computer and use it just like any USB C mic.

I know sound quality is a subjective thing. Trying to express how good this mic sounds is difficult to get across with just some words on a page. So I'll just say in comparison I like the sound quality better than my Sennheiser MKE 400 which is a $200 mic. It also sounds Much better than my Rode VideoMic Go II which is a $130 mic. Neither of those mics have stepless gain knobs by the way so you are at the mercy of the preamps of your camera.

One last feature I want to mention is the upgraded shock mount. On this one you can actually adjust the mic forward and back on the shock mount so no more bumping your face into the back of the mic if you are using the viewfinder of your camera.

The sound quality and everything included in the package for only $99 is amazing and I give huge kudos to Deity for producing a new upgraded mic that is actually CHEAPER than the previous version! Not many companies doing that these days.

Best $100 video mic

Really happy with the sound so far and the accessories are very high quality for this price point. Obviously not a ton of reach/isolation because it’s such a short shotgun but it’s perfect for nats or close miked dialogue, vlogging. Really great affordable option for an on camera mic or entry level boom.
